What is ASTM A182 / UNS S32760 Duplex Super Duplex

ASTM A182 / UNS S32760, or Super Duplex Stainless Steel for short, is an alloy with outstanding performance, developed to be applied in highly corrosive conditions. The duplex microstructure is comprised of roughly equivalent proportions of ferrite and austenite and confers distinctive balance in mechanical strength and corrosion resistance. This material shows superior resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion, excellent weld ability and superior performance in solutions rich in chlorides. The composition of alloys normally contains 25% Cr, 7% Ni, 3.5% Mo, small contents of Cu and W with added nitrogen imparting strength and corrosion resistance

Key features of the UNS S32760:

Twice that of standard austenitic stainless steels: Super Strength.

High resistance to localized and uniform corrosion, particularly with involvement from the chemical and marine environments.

Toughness and Durability: Resists well in both high pressures and low temperatures.

Definition is ASTM A182 / UNS S32760 Duplex Super Duplex

ASTM A182 / UNS S32760 Duplex Super Duplex belongs to the general classification of ASTM A 182 alloys with UNS or Unified Numbering System being S 32760. It is, therefore, one of the super duplex stainless steel material because it has more content of austenitic phases as well as ferritic phases combined to make stainless steel alloy have both types’ properties.

Machinability of ASTM A182 / UNS S32760 Duplex Super Duplex

The distinctive microstructure of this grade contains two phases: austenitic and ferritic. Due to their microstructure, there is a concern in the machinability of this ASTM A182 / UNS S32760 Duplex Super Duplex stainless steel. Exemplified by UNS S32760 types, super duplex stainless steels are resistant to strength corrosion and also durable but possess other properties that tend to make these harder to be machined compared to other stainless grades.

Hardness:

The UNS S32760, like any other super duplex stainless steel grade, is of high hardness due to its composition. Therefore, it is hard to machine.

This property also tends to increase with age hardening or cold working, leading to tool wear and sometimes problematic attainment of smooth finishes.

Tool Wear:

The high strength and hardness of the material tend to provide faster tool wear for standard tools. Therefore, high-performance tooling like carbide inserts or cermet tools are mainly recommended.

High content of molybdenum and chromium increases the tendency to cause abrasive wear on cutting tools.

Conclusion of ASTM A182 / UNS S32760 Duplex Super Duplex

Duplex Super Duplex stainless steel ASTM A182 / UNS S32760: Duplex Super Duplex stainless steel is a high-performance alloy offering an exceptional balance of strength, corrosion resistance, and stress corrosion cracking resistance. The composition combining both austenitic and ferritic microstructures has improved mechanical properties, ideal for demanding applications in aggressive environments such as offshore, marine, and chemical processing industries.
